- Ask a lot of questions so you can make sure of all the features and benefits; not all storage facilities are the same.
- Plan your storage space. Place items you need in the front to get to them easier.
- Make up an inventory of all the items in your new storage unit, and keep this list in a safe place.
- Prepare your storage space; placing boxes on plastic or pallets helps prevent the dampness from getting to your personal items.
- Also do not pack boxes up against the walls, this restricts ventilation and may cause damage to your items.
- Do not store anything flammable.
- List contents that are in each box on all four sides of the box, also you might want to think about numbering each of the boxes.
- Stack the lighter boxes on the top of the heavier boxes.
- Fill boxes completely, partially filled or bulging boxes can collapse or tip over causing things in that box and boxes around it to break.
- Take things apart, such as bed frames. It will help with space.
- In a conventional storage unit (not climate controlled) it is important to tend your unit. Open door to air it out on a sunny, low-humidity day. Also check unit after a rainy spell.
